Message of the Day: When People Insult and Persecute You, Be Happy!
“Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” (Matthew 5:11-12, NASB)
The collection of Jesus’ teachings commonly known as the Sermon on the Mount deals with the attitudes, behavior and responsibilities of those who have come under the lordship of Jesus Christ.
Matthew 5:1-2 is a series of short two-line statements commonly known as Beatitudes (from the Latin word for ‘blessed’). The word ‘blessed’ in Greek means ‘happy’ or ‘happiest’. Jesus is not making a formal declaration of heavenly favor, but announcing the true happiness of those who live according to the life of the kingdom.
For instance, when you are insulted and persecuted for Christ’s sake you must be happy, knowing that you will receive exceeding reward and heaven. Furthermore, persecution unites us with God’s people of former days (“for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you“, v. 12).
So, when you are insulted or persecuted, be happy! Be happiest!
