Message of the Day: A Life of Constant Readiness for the Coming of the Lord.
“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness.” (2 Peter 3:10-11, NKJV)
The coming of the Lord will be unexpected as a thief. It will bring destruction to all things. The apocalyptic language used here may describe the phenomena of our atomic age. It may refer to the destruction of the atmospheric heavens with a great rushing sound. The ‘elements‘ may refer either to the heavenly bodies or to the physical elements – in the 1st century era, these are earth, air, fire, and water, in today’s advanced and precise scientific terminologies, hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, etc.
Either the earth and its contents will disappear and not be seen anymore, or the earth and all man’s works will appear before God’s judgment seat.
The transitory nature of the material universe ought to make a difference in one’s system of values and priorities. Christians should live in a state of constant readiness for that day by being holy and godly.
