Message of the Day: Startled, yet Mary’s Heart Must have Thrilled at the Angelic Message!
“Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a son, and shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest.” (Luke 1:30-32, NKJV)
Mary was startled and puzzled when the angel announced that though still a virgin, she will conceive and give birth to a son, and this son would be the promised Messiah. What a woman she must have been to be chosen of God to impart and mold the human nature of His Son! And how her heart must have thrilled at the angelic message that she was to be the mother of Jesus Christ.
The title “Son of the Most High” (NASB), has two significance: One, the divine Son of God and two, the Messiah born in time. It was promised in the Old Testament that the Messiah will be coming from the descendants of David. Mary was a descendant of David, as was Joseph. Thus, Jesus could rightly be called a “son of David.”
