Message of the Day: Joseph and Mary Were of the Royal Line and Both Were Law-Abiding Citizens!
“Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child.” (Luke 2:4-5, NKJV)
This refers to the census during the Roman governor Quirinius in A.D. 7, which was 10 to 13 years after Jesus was born. Census were held for taxation purposes. Joseph and Mary resided in Nazareth, north of Palestine, but their town of origin was Bethlehem, the birthplace of their forefather David. Bethlehem was at least a three-day trip from Nazareth.
When the government issued an order that all people were to return to their ancestral town for the census, the couple journeyed back to their hometown. It was overcrowded with people returning for the census that they could not find a place to stay except in a stable with animals. There Mary gave birth to Jesus (Luke 2:1-7).
Despite Mary’s delicate condition, she joined Joseph to fulfill their duty as citizens under the Roman Empire. They travelled all the way to Bethlehem the root of their royal line.
