The total number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines as of yesterday May 1, 2020 is 8, 772 with 1, 084 recoveries and 579 deaths. While the total number of COVID-19 cases in the world reached 3.27M, with 1.02M recovered, and 234K deaths.
By virtue of Executive Order No. 112, Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) is extended in the NCR; Region III except Aurora Province; Region IV-A (CALABARZON); Benguet Province; Pangasinan Province; Iloilo Province; Cebu Province; Bacolod City; and Davao City. The rest of the country is put under General Community Quarantine (GCQ).
There were some confusions over the past two days as the IATF flip-flopped on the guidelines on religious and work gatherings.
We also observed an erosion of discipline since the start of ECQ in the entire Luzon. There were reports of people disobeying quarantine protocols, some of those who received Social Amelioration Packaged used the money to buy liquor and illegal drugs. A woman had a visit to the salon for hot oil treatment using SAP money. While the government does not require liquidation, it is expected that the money should be used for essential needs.
Barangay Tanods are mobbed and hurt by doing their jobs, while some policemen and barangay officials commit abuse of authority, residents in posh villages and condominiums violating quarantine protocols, and many other instances showing an erosion of discipline.
According to Dr. Socorro Escalante of WHO:
“It takes one year to one and a half years to certify that the vaccine is safe and effective.” (Monday, April 27, 2020, DOH Virtual Presser)
This would mean that it will take some time before we can get vaccinated. What will happen to us if this level of discipline will continue?
Coronavirus or COVID-19 has brought us back to the basic unit of society – the family. Most of the things we know today, our morals and values in particular, we learned them at home.
Proverbs 22: 1-6 says, A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches,
Loving favor rather than silver and gold. The rich and the poor have this in common,
The Lord is the maker of them all. A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself,
But the simple pass on and are punished. By humility and the fear of the Lord
Are riches and honor and life. Thorns and snares are in the way of the perverse;
He who guards his soul will be far from them.Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.
People vary in reputation and status, but they should respect one another as being equally God’s creatures. Wise people will act with caution and humility. They will bring up their children in a way that prepares them for experiences they will face in the life ahead.
We can still fix this lack of discipline in people’s lives by going back to these three virtues, respect – self-respect is foremost, respect the government and people in uniform, respect fellow human being. Humility – be humble at all times and in all circumstances, and preparedness – prepare the children for the experiences they will face in life for if we teach them the way they should go, they will never depart from it when they grow old.
Our deliberate virtuous and spiritual training during the early years of our children will have a lasting effect on them.
