Message of the Day: Christ’s Headship of the Church is Shown Through the Sacrifice of Himself.
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word.” (Ephesians 5:25-26, NKJV)
If we are Christians, we must show it in all areas of life— business, social, and domestic. The relationship between husband and wife is here represented as being a counterpart of the relation between Christ and the church (vv. 25, 32).
Paul exhorts to mutual love and devotion—he in no way suggests that a man has a right to make a slave of his wife. Each is dependent on the other because of the different functions that each has in human society. Each serves him- or herself best by serving the other (v. 28). He that loves his wife loves himself: husbands, take note.
If a family is to enjoy genuine satisfaction, it must have leadership, and this responsibility rests with the husbands. As the church submits to Christ, so the wife is to submit to her husband. Christ’s headship of the church, however, was shown not through the use of force, but through the sacrifice of himself for her, so that she might be pure and faultless. Likewise the husband’s headship of the wife is shown not by forcing his authority upon her, but by treating her as equal with himself.
There is unity between husband and wife, as there is between Christ and his church. This unity is the basis of the relationship.
