On July 3,1997 Britain’s Prince Charles arrived in the country aboard the royal yacht Britannica, following the turn over of Hong Kong from British rule to China.
Prince Charles is making a whirlwind visit to the Philippines affirming East Asia’s political and commercial importance to Britain after the handover of Hong Kong to China. The Philippine Navy band and three 21-gun salutes greeted (Thursday) the heir apparent to England’s throne as he disembarked from the Royal Yacht Britannia on his eight-hour stop enroute home.
The prince, the third member of the royal family to visit the Philippines since October, was accorded the honors reserved for a head of state. British Ambassador Adrian Thorpe said the Manila visit was the best way of demonstrating to the Philippines and to the countries in the region that Britain continues to have a ‘most important and valuable relationship in this part of the world.’
