Message of the Day: The Word That Can Save Your Soul!
“Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.” (James 1:21, NKJV)
In 1:19–25 James tells his readers to control their temper, to be a good listener, to abstain from filthy talk and to be doers of the word. In v. 18 the word is called the instrument of the souls birth. In v. 21 it is the agent of the souls salvation. In v. 23 it is represented as a mirror, showing us ourselves in our true light. If we act on what we are taught in the Word—if we do what it says, we will be blessed!
There is always the tendency for us to become ill-tempered, especially in times of difficulty or stress. As Christians we must not excuse our ill-temper by claiming that we are defending God’s honor. Such attitudes have no place in the Christian life. They must be replaced by new attitudes that arise from studying God’s word and putting its teachings into practice (1:19-21).
We have received the Word or the doctrine of Christ, it has already been planted in our hearts and is as powerful to save our souls. Let us allow it to grow and manifest its fruit in our deeds.
