Message of the Day: A Reaffirmation of Commitment to Christ!
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (Matthew 16:15-16, NKJV)
It had been some three years since Peter had first accepted Jesus as the Messiah (John 1:41–42). A year later he had called Him Lord (Luke 5:8). Half a year after that he called Him the Holy One of God (John 6:68–69). Now, after two and a half years of traveling with Jesus, he expresses his conviction that Jesus is the Son of the living God.
Jesus and the disciples travelled up to Caesarea Philippi, in the far north of Palestine. While there, Jesus asked them who they believed him to be. He had never put this question before, but the crisis He was reaching made it fitting that he should now have it from them.
Peter, probably speaking for the group, replied that he was the promised Messiah, the Son of the living God. This great confession means that they believe in Jesus as the Messiah and are still true to him in spite pf the defection of the Galilean populace. It is a reaffirmation of their devotion and commitment to Christ.
Delighted at this insight, Jesus told the group (through words addressed to their spokesperson Peter) that they would be the foundation on which he would build his church, and no power would be able to conquer it. By preaching the gospel they would open the kingdom to all who wished to enter. They would carry Jesus’ authority with them, so that the things they did on earth in his name would be confirmed in heaven.
