July 22, 1993, the last week of July of each year was designated.
Proclamation No. 213 signed on July 22, 1993 by then President Fidel V. Ramos, declared the fourth week of July of every year as diabetes awareness week.
The Proclamation designates the Philippine Center for Diabetes Education Foundation, Inc., as an organization dedicated to helping individuals suffering from diabetes and its complications.

A Diabetes Center teaching health care professionals about diabetes was established by the Foundation said Foundation.
The proclamation also states that the Philippine Center for Diabetes Education Foundation, Inc., will ultimately establish Diabetes Centers in all the far-flung barangays of the country.
The goal of ProclamationNo. 213 is to educate the people on diabetes as a dreaded disease.
Diabetes, a disease associated with high sugar levels in the body, is usually diagnosed among obese people, those with improper diet and sedentary lifestyle. Individuals with family history of diabetes mellitus (DM), heart diseases, hypertension and high levels of uric acid and lipids are in the high-risk groups. People in highly stressed conditions are also included in risk groups.
