October 27, 2002, the GSIS Purchased Juan Luna’s “Parisian Life” Painting at an Auction in Hong Kong
Interior d’un Café (Parisian Life), an oil in canvas impressionist painting, by Juan Luna Y Novicio (1857-1899) was exhibited in 1904 at the St Louis Exposition (World’s Fair) and was acquired by the GSIS on October 27, 2002 at Christie’s in Hong Kong at the price of $870000 (around P45.4 to P46 million). Luna completed the painting in Paris before he returned to his home country to join the Philippines’ Propaganda Movement.

Luna made this 53×75-centimeter oil painting sometime in 1892, which depicts an unidentified Parisian lady and Filipino heroes Dr. Jose Rizal, Juan Luna and Dr. Ariston Bautista.
It is possibly the last major work of Luna considering that he traveled more often than painting during the latter years of his life, finishing only a handful of Philippines landscapes.
