Message of the Day: We Are Called From Darkness to Light to Live A Holy Life
“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light..” (1 Peter 2:9, NKJV)
This verse is a direct quotation of Exodus 19:6, implying that all Christians, including Gentile Christians, share in God’s covenant with Israel. Jewish people on the Passover described their deliverance from Egypt as a call “from darkness into great light.”
During the period of the Old Testament Israel was called God’s chosen people, His chosen nation; but in the New Testament all believers are God’s people designated as chosen, or elect, regardless of race. As priests or holy priesthood (1 Peter 2:5), believers are to (1) reflect the holiness of God and that of their high priest, (2) offer spiritual sacrifices (3) intercede for man before God (4) represent God before man. Though once not the people of God, they are now the recipients of God’s mercy.
They pass from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. They have received God’s mercy. The emphasis here is God’s call to a holy way of life expressed in our relationships within our faith communities. Let us heed God’s call to build a spiritual house where holy people offer spiritual sacrifices. Not to magnify ourselves but to tell other of the glory, mercy and good of God.
