Message of the Day: We Are Safe If God Is Our Friend!
“I called on the Lord in distress;
The Lord answered me and set me in a broad place.
The Lord is on my side;
I will not fear.
What can man do to me?” (Psalm 118:5-6, NKJV)
Originally this hymn was apparently sung by a combination of the temple singers, the congregation and the king, to mark some great national occasion such as a victory in battle. The scene is set in the temple, where the royal procession enters the gates and moves to the altar. The singers call Israel to worship, and the congregation responds with praise to God for his steadfast love. The king then recounts how, in answer to prayer, God saved him from his enemies.
He is a standing proof and living witness of God’s mercy. We can take encouragement from him.
In the very midst of trouble he called upon the Lord; his voice was heard, as it were, coming from the depth of his sorrows. God heard his prayers and delivered him. He was before pressed on every side; sorrows compassed him around; he could not move; he had no liberty. Now God gave him space and freedom on every side, so that he could move without obstruction and pain.
The Lord is with us. He is our helper. He defends our cause. We have nothing to be afraid of. God is more mighty than any or all of our foes, and he can deliver us from all. People can do no more than God permits. They cannot destroy us when he means to save us; they cannot defeat his gracious designs toward us. We are safe if God is our friend.
