Message of the Day: We Are Fighting A Spiritual Battle!
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” (Ephesians 6:12-13, NKJV)
The Christian’s warfare is against more than the natural temptations of the sinful nature. There are powers in the unseen world against which we alone are powerless, powers we can resist only with the aid of Christ. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, the Word, prayer – these are the weapons that will “extinguish all the flaming arrows” of the unseen enemy and allow us to stand against the deception of Satan.
Pau urges his readers to put on the spiritual armor provided by God and to fight the satanic powers which dominate the world. Perhaps the sight of the soldier to whom Paul is handcuffed while dictating this epistle in his house-prison suggests “the full armor of God.”
We are to overcome or vanquish all our enemies, and thus stand firm. Every foe was to be subdued – no matter how numerous or formidable they might be. Safety and triumph could be looked for only when every enemy was defeated!
Our battle is spiritual. It is fought by prayerfully submitting to God and doing his will, not by directly addressing the hostile powers. As ancient soldiers wore armour when they fought their battles, so we, Christians must prepare ourselves for conflict. We receive our armour, as well as our strength, from God, but our ourselves must fight the battle. Above all we must make sure that when the battle is over, we are still on our feet.
