“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27, MEV)

Jesus saw that his disciples were confused and unsettled, and promised them his peace. By this he did not mean a life free from trouble, but an inward calm such as he had. Though outwardly afflicted, inwardly he had peace. The disciples should not have been troubled about Jesus’ coming death, but glad that by that death he was bringing to completion the work his Father had given him. (John 14:27-29)

This greeting or benediction was common among the Jews in Jesus’ time, it invokes peace and happiness. In this occasion however, it was more than an empty rhetoric because it came from Jesus who had power to make peace and to confer it on all. This peace Jesus offers to them refers to the comfort which he gave to his disciples in view of his approaching death.

Today, we are assured that we have the Lord’s peace. Not the one that the systems (Pax Romana) and men of the world offer. Men may shower us with flattering words and empty promises but their professed friendship is often reigned and has no sincerity. Furthermore, we do not need to be afraid of hardships and trials because we have a friend who will never leave us, we have peace that shall always attend to us.
