Message of the Day: Put Forth Every Effort to Live the Godly Life
“Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering…” (Colossians 3:12, NKJV)
Israel was called “elect of God” (chosen by God), and so are the Christians. Divine election is a constant theme in Paul’s letters, but the Bible never teaches that it dulls human responsibility. On the contrary, as this verse shows, it is precisely because the Christian has been elected to eternal salvation that he must put forth every effort to live the godly life. For Paul, divine sovereignty and human responsibility go hand in hand.
Verses13-14, further say, “bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.”
Thus, we should put off old sinful habits as we would put off dirty clothes. We should put on new good habits as we would put on fresh clean clothes. We have a new attitude, which thinks of others before thinking of self. It is as if the new ‘clothes’ we have just put on are bound together by love, so that our appearance is one of genuine beauty and completeness.
