Message of the Day: All Who Are In Christ Participate in His Death and Resurrection
“Either way, Christ’s love controls us. Since we believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our old life.” (2 Corinthians 5:14, NLT)
Because Christ died for all, He involved all in his death. For some Christ’s death would confirm their own death, but for others his death was their death to sin and self, so that they now live in and with the resurrected Christ. However, some hold that Paul is not speaking specifically here about the scope of Christ’s atonement but about the effect of Christ’s death on the Christian life. Thus “all” would refer not to mankind in general but only to the church.
Christ died the death that we, as sinners, should have died; firstly to bear the penalty of our sins, and secondly, to put an end to living for ourselves. From now on we should live for him. Furthermore, since we are in Christ, we all participate in his death and resurrection.
